ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enCanopy bulk density (CBD) describes the density of available canopy fuel in a stand. It is defined as the mass of available canopy fuel per canopy volume unit. Geospatial data describing canopy bulk density supplies information for fire behavior models, such as FARSITE (Finney 1998), to determine the initiation and spread characteristics of crown fires across landscapes (VanWagner 1977, 1993). The Canopy Bulk Density layer for the conterminous U.S. is generated using a predictive modeling approach that relates Landsat imagery and spatially explicit biophysical gradients to calculated values of CBD from field training sites. Because of model requirements, these data are provided for forested areas only. The Canopy Bulk Density layer for Alaska and Hawaii uses the same method described above where plot data were adequate. In instances where there are insufficient or no plot data, consideration is given to similar systems in the conterminous U.S. when possible or CBD is administratively assigned by fire behavior experts. The units of measurement for the LANDFIRE Canopy Bulk Density layer are kg m-3 * 100. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enForest canopy cover describes the percent cover of the tree canopy in a stand. Specifically, canopy cover describes the vertical projection of the tree canopy onto an imaginary horizontal surface representing the ground’s surface. A spatially explicit map of canopy cover supplies information to fire behavior models, such as FARSITE (Finney 1998), to determine surface fuel shading for calculating dead fuel moisture and for calculating wind reductions. The Canopy Cover layer is generated using a predictive modeling approach that relates Landsat imagery and spatially explicit biophysical gradients to calculated values of average canopy cover from field training sites and digital orthophoto quadrangles. The units of measurement for the LANDFIRE Canopy Cover layer are percent. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enThese original 13 standard fire behavior fuel models serve as input to Rothermel’s mathematical surface fire behavior and spread model (Rothermel 1972). Fire behavior fuel models represent distinct distributions of fuel loading found among surface fuel components (live and dead), size classes, and fuel types. The fuel models are described by the most common fire-carrying fuel type (grass, brush, timber litter, or slash), loading and surface area-to-volume ratio by size class and component, fuelbed depth, and moisture of extinction. These fire behavior fuel models can serve as input to the FARSITE fire growth simulation model (Finney 1998) and FlamMap fire potential simulator (Stratton 2004). Further detail on these original fire behavior fuel models can be found in Anderson (1982) and Rothermel (1983). ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enForest canopy height describes the average height of the top of the vegetated canopy. Geospatial data describing canopy height supplies information to fire behavior models, such as FARSITE (Finney 1998), to determine the probability of crown fire ignition, calculate wind reductions, and compute the volume of crown fuel (VanWagner 1977, 1993). The Canopy Height layer is generated using a predictive modeling approach that relates Landsat imagery and spatially explicit biophysical gradients to calculated values of average dominant height from field training sites. Because of model requirements, these data are provided for forested areas only. The units of measurement for the LANDFIRE Canopy Height layer are meters * 10.REQUIRED: A summary of the intentions with which the data set was developed.REQUIRED: The basis on which the time period of content information is determined.REQUIRED: The year (and optionally month, or month and day) for which the data set corresponds to the ground.REQUIRED: The state of the data set.REQUIRED: The frequency with which changes and additions are made to the data set after the initial data set is completed.-160.266668-154.66970522.29535518.851794369513.744904946533.7449042089769.2016052465519.201605REQUIRED: Reference to a formally registered thesaurus or a similar authoritative source of theme keywords.Forest Canopy HeightREQUIRED: Restrictions and legal prerequisites for accessing the data set.REQUIRED: Restrictions and legal prerequisites for using the data set after access is granted.File Geodatabase Raster Datasetfile://\\FW-XP-RONC-LT\C$\My Dropbox\SWARSGIS\LANDFIRE_Hawaii.gdbLocal Area Network0020.000File Geodatabase Raster DatasetDataset copied.C:\WorkSpace\z79_ch2010021713521500Microsoft Windows XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 3; Fire behavior fuel models represent distinct distributions of fuel loading found among surface fuel components (live and dead), size classes, and fuel types. The fuel models are described by the most common fire-carrying fuel type (grass, brush, timber litter, or slash), loading and surface area-to-volume ratio by size class and component, fuelbed depth, and moisture of extinction. Specifically, it is the lowest height in a stand at which there is a sufficient amount of forest canopy fuel to propagate fire vertically into the canopy. Geospatial data describing canopy base height provides information for fire behavior models, such as FARSITE (Finney 1998), to determine areas in which a surface fire is likely to transition to a crown fire (VanWagner 1977, 1993). The Canopy Base Height layer for the conterminous U.S. is generated using a predictive modeling approach that relates Landsat imagery and spatially explicit biophysical gradients to calculated values of CBH from field training sites. Because of model requirements, these data are provided for forested areas only. The Canopy Base Height layer for Alaska and Hawaii uses the same method described above where plot data were adequate. In instances where there are insufficient or no plot data, consideration is given to similar systems in the conterminous U.S. when possible or CBH is administratively assigned by fire behavior experts. The units of measurement for the LANDFIRE Canopy Base Height layer are meters * 10. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enThis recently developed set of standard fire behavior fuel models contains more fuel models in every fuel type (grass, shrub, timber, slash) than does Anderson's set of 13 fuel models. The main objective in creating these new models was to increase the ability to illustrate the effects of fuel treatments using fire behavior modeling. The number of fuel models for use in areas where fire tends to burn well at relatively high dead fuel moisture content has been increased, and fuel models with an herbaceous component are now dynamic fuel models, meaning that load is dynamically shifted between live and dead (to simulate curing of the herbaceous component) rather than assumed to be constant. These fire behavior fuel models can serve as input to the FARSITE fire growth simulation model (Finney 1998), FlamMap fire potential simulator (Stratton 2004), BehavePlus fire behavior model (Andrews and others 2005), NEXUS crown fire potential model (Scott 2003), and FFE-FVS forest stand simulator (Reinhardt and Crookston 2003). Nomographs for estimating fire behavior using the new fuel models without the use of a computer are now available via Rocky Mountain Research Station Publications. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enThe LANDFIRE Environmental Site Potential (ESP) layer represents the vegetation that could be supported at a given site based on the biophysical environment. This layer is used in LANDFIRE to inform the existing vegetation and fuel mapping processes. Map units are based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems classification, which is a nationally consistent set of mid-scale ecological units (Comer and others 2003). LANDFIRE’s use of these classification units to describe environmental site potential differs from their intended use as units of existing vegetation. As used in LANDFIRE, map unit names represent the natural plant communities that would become established at late or climax stages of successional development in the absence of disturbance. They reflect the current climate and physical environment, as well as the competitive potential of native plant species. The LANDFIRE ESP concept is similar to that used in classifications of potential vegetation, including habitat types (Daubenmire 1968; Pfister and others 1977) and plant associations (Henderson and others 1989). The ESP layer was generated using a predictive modeling approach that relates spatially explicit layers representing biophysical gradients and topography to field training sites assigned to ESP map units. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enThe Biophysical Settings (BpS) layer represents the vegetation that may have been dominant on the landscape prior to Euro-American settlement and is based on both the current biophysical environment and an approximation of the historical disturbance regime. It is a refinement of the Environmental Site Potential layer; in this refinement, we attempt to incorporate current scientific knowledge regarding the functioning of ecological processes - such as fire - in the centuries preceding non-indigenous human influence. Map units are based on NatureServe's Ecological Systems classification, which is a nationally consistent set of mid-scale ecological units (Comer and others 2003). LANDFIRE's use of these classification units to describe biophysical settings differs from their intended use as units of existing vegetation. As used in LANDFIRE, map unit names represent the natural plant communities that may have been present during the reference period. Each BpS map unit is matched with a model of vegetation succession, and both serve as key inputs to the LANDSUM landscape succession model (Keane and others 2002). The LANDFIRE BpS concept is similar to the concept of potential natural vegetation groups used in mapping and modeling efforts related to fire regime condition class (Schmidt and others 2002; www.frcc.gov).REQUIRED: A summary of the intentions with which the data set was developed.REQUIRED: The basis on which the time period of content information is determined.REQUIRED: The year (and optionally month, or month and day) for which the data set corresponds to the ground.REQUIRED: The state of the data set.REQUIRED: The frequency with which changes and additions are made to the data set after the initial data set is completed.-160.266668-154.66970522.29535518.851794369513.744904946533.7449042089769.2016052465519.201605REQUIRED: Reference to a formally registered thesaurus or a similar authoritative source of theme keywords.Biophysical SettingsREQUIRED: Restrictions and legal prerequisites for accessing the data set.REQUIRED: Restrictions and legal prerequisites for using the data set after access is granted.File Geodatabase Raster Datasetfile://\\FW-XP-RONC-LT\C$\My Dropbox\SWARSGIS\LANDFIRE_Hawaii.gdbLocal Area Network0020.000File Geodatabase Raster DatasetDataset copied.E:\Landfire\Hawaii\firelab_delivery\z79_bps2010020514144000Microsoft Windows XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 3; The historical reference conditions of these successional states are simulated using the vegetation and disturbance dynamics model LANDSUM (Keane and others 2002). The existing succession classes can also represent uncharacteristic vegetation components, such as exotic species, that are not found within the compositional or structural variability of successional states defined for a biophysical setting. The area contained in succession classes is compared to the simulated historical reference conditions to calculate measurements of vegetation departure, such as fire regime condition class. It is important to note that succession classes do not directly quantify fuel characteristics of the current vegetation, but rather represent vegetative states with unique succession or disturbance-related dynamics, such as structural development or fire frequency. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enThe Fire Regime Groups layer represents an integration of the spatial fire regime characteristics of frequency and severity simulated using the vegetation and disturbance dynamics model LANDSUM (Keane and others 2002). These groups are intended to characterize the presumed historical fire regimes within landscapes based on interactions between vegetation dynamics, fire spread, fire effects, and spatial context (Hann and others 2004). Fire regime group definitions have been altered from previous applications (Hann & Bunnell 2001; Schmidt and others 2002; Wildland Fire Communicator's Guide)Guide) to best approximate the definitions outlined in the Interagency Fire Regime Condition Class Guidebook (Hann and others 2004). These definitions were refined to create discrete, mutually exclusive criteria appropriate for use with LANDFIRE’s fire frequency and severity data products. For Alaska and Hawaii, the Fire Regime Group was derived from the FRG values provided in the Model Tracker Database for each corresponding BpS model, rather than from LANDSUM. The fire regime groups mapped by LANDFIRE include the following: * Fire Regime I (0 to 35 year frequency, low to mixed severity) * Fire Regime II (0 to 35 year frequency, replacement severity) * Fire Regime III (35 to 200 year frequency, low to mixed severity) * Fire Regime IV (35 to 200 year frequency, replacement severity) * Fire Regime V (200+ year frequency, any severity) REQUIRED: A summary of the intentions with which the data set was developed.REQUIRED: The basis on which the time period of content information is determined.REQUIRED: The year (and optionally month, or month and day) for which the data set corresponds to the ground.REQUIRED: The state of the data set.REQUIRED: The frequency with which changes and additions are made to the data set after the initial data set is completed.-160.266668-154.66970522.29535518.851794369513.744904946533.7449042089769.2016052465519.201605REQUIRED: Reference to a formally registered thesaurus or a similar authoritative source of theme keywords.Fire Regime GroupsREQUIRED: Restrictions and legal prerequisites for accessing the data set.REQUIRED: Restrictions and legal prerequisites for using the data set after access is granted.File Geodatabase Raster Datasetfile://\\FW-XP-RONC-LT\C$\My Dropbox\SWARSGIS\LANDFIRE_Hawaii.gdbLocal Area Network0020.000File Geodatabase Raster DatasetDataset copied.E:\Landfire\Hawaii\firelab_delivery\z79_frg2010020514145100Microsoft Windows XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 3; ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3500enBroad-scale alterations of historical fire regimes and vegetation dynamics have occurred in many landscapes in the U.S. through the combined influence of land management practices, fire exclusion, ungulate herbivory, insect and disease outbreaks, climate change, and invasion of non-native plant species. The LANDFIRE Project produces maps of simulated historical fire regimes and vegetation conditions using the LANDSUM landscape succession and disturbance dynamics model. The LANDFIRE Project also produces maps of current vegetation and measurements of current vegetation departure from simulated historical reference conditions. These maps support fire and landscape management planning outlined in the goals of the National Fire Plan, Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy, and the Healthy Forests Restoration Act. Succession classes (termed vegetation-fuel classes in the Interagency Fire Regime Condition Class Guidebook version 1.0, Hann and others 2004) characterize current vegetation conditions with respect to the vegetation species composition, vegetation cover, and vegetation height ranges of successional states that occur within each biophysical setting. Specific products include fire behavior fuel models, canopy bulk density (CBD), canopy base height (CBH), canopy cover (CC), and canopy height (CH). These data may be implemented within fire behavior and effects models to predict the behavior and effects of wildland fire. These data are useful for strategic fuel treatment prioritization and tactical assessment of fire behavior and effects.DATA SUMMARY:Canopy cover describes percent cover of tree canopy in a stand. A spatially-explicit map of canopy cover supplies information for fire behavior models such as FARSITE (Finney 1998) to determine surface fuel shading for calculating dead fuel moisture and for calculating wind adjustment factors. In FARSITE, canopy cover is used to compute shading, wind adjustment factors, spotting distances and crown fuel volume. Canopy characteristics refer to the tree canopy. Where there are tree canopies, i.e. existing vegetation types that are forest and woodland, LANDFIRE has attributed the grid with canopy characteristics with some exceptions. There will be no canopy characteristics in fuel types where the tree canopy is considered a part of the surface fuel and the surface fire behavior fuel model is chosen as such. This is because LANDFIRE assumes the potential burnable biomass in the tree canopy has been accounted for in the surface fuel model parameters. For example, young or short conifer stands where the trees are represented by a shrub type fuel model will not have canopy characteristics.CC is generated separately for tree, shrub and herbaceous cover life forms using training data and a series of geospatial data layers. Percentage tree, shrub, and herbaceous canopy cover training data are assembled using plot-level ground-based visual assessments and are then binned into discrete classes as follows: (A) Tree classes; 10-25 %, 25-60 %, 60-100 %, (B) Shrub classes; 10-25 %, 25-60 %, 60-100% (C) Herbaceous vegetation classes; 10-60 %, 60-100 %. The 0-10 % canopy cover range is designated "sparse". Once the training data are developed, relationships are then established separately for each life form between the training data and the combination of multitemporal Landsat data, digital elevation data and biophysical gradient data layers using decision tree analysis (See5). The derived decision tree equations are then applied to the geospatial data to create 30m resolution life form specific data layers (i.e., separate data layers are generated for tree, shrub and herbaceous vegetation cover), which are then combined into a composite layer based on the lifeform of the existing vegetation type. All non - forest values, including herbaceous and shrub systems and non-burnable types such as urban, barren, snow and ice and agriculture, were coded as 0. The time period for this data set is not applicable. In other words, it is not possible to characterize this data set with a single date, nor is it logical to use a range. FARSITE: Fire area simulator-model development and evaluation. U.S. Department of Agriculture, RMRS-RP-4, p. 51LANDFIRE is a five-year, multi-partner wildland fire, ecosystem, and wildland fuel mapping project. This project will generate consistent, comprehensive maps and data describing vegetation, fire, and fuel characteristics across the United States in support the National Fire Plan and the Healthy Forests Restoration Act. The LANDFIRE Project is producing digital geospatial data describing existing vegetation composition and structure, wildland fuel (crown and surface), simulated historical fire regimes, and current departure from simulated historical vegetation conditions. The consistent and comprehensive nature of LANDFIRE methods ensures that data will be nationally relevant, while the 30-meter grid resolution assures that data can be locally applicable. Mapped data is produced based on peer-reviewed science from the fields of remote sensing, ecosystem simulation, vegetation and disturbance ecology, predictive landscape mapping, landscape simulation, and fire behavior and effects modeling. LANDFIRE is supported by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service Office of Fire and Aviation Management, the US Department of Interior (US DOI) Office of Wildland Fire Coordination, and The Nature Conservancy. LANDFIRE tasks are completed at the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory (MFSL) in Missoula, Montana; USDOI Geological Survey for Earth Resources Observation and Science (USGS EROS) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and The Nature Conservancy in Boulder, Colorado. LANDFIRE meets agency, partner, and stakeholder needs for data to support landscape fire management planning, prioritization of fuel treatments, collaboration, community and firefighter protection, and effective resource allocation. Specific products include fire behavior fuel models, canopy bulk density (CBD), canopy base height (CBH), canopy cover (CC), and canopy height (CH). These data may be implemented within fire behavior and effects models to predict the behavior and effects of wildland fire. These data are useful for strategic fuel treatment prioritization and tactical assessment of fire behavior and effects.DATA SUMMARY:Canopy height describes the average height of the top of the canopy for a stand. A spatially-explicit map of canopy height supplies information for fire behavior models such as FARSITE (Finney 1998) to determine the starting point for embers for calculation of the maximum spotting distance, to calculate wind adjustments, and to compute the volume of crown fuels. In FARSITE, canopy characteristics are used to compute shading, wind reduction factors, spotting distances, crown fuel volume, spread characteristics of crown fires and incorporate the effects of ladder fuels for transitions from a surface to crown fire. For example, young or short conifer stands, where the trees are represented by a shrub type fuel model, will not have canopy characteristics. CH is generated separately for tree, shrub and herbaceous cover life forms using training data and a series of geospatial data layers. CH is determined for each plot by the average height weighted by species cover and based on existing vegetation type (EVT) life-form assignments. Dominant lifeform height of each plot is then binned as follows: (A) Tree classes; 0-10 m, greater than 10 m, (B) Shrub classes; 0-0.5 m, 0.5-1.5 m, greater than 1.5 m, (C) Herbaceous vegetation classes; 0-0.5 m, greater than 0.5 m. Decision tree models using field reference data and Landsat imagery, digital elevation model data, and biophysical gradient data, are then developed separately for each of the three life forms using See5 software. The models are used to generate life-form specific height class spatial data layers, which are later merged into a single composite height data layer based on the existing vegetation type. All non-forest values, including non-burnable types such as urban, barren, snow and ice and agriculture, were coded as 0. The time period for this data set is not applicable. In other words, it is not possible to characterize this data set with a single date, nor is it logical to use a range. Field plot data contributed either directly or indirectly to this LANDFIRE National data product. Vegetation is mapped using predictive landscape models based on extensive field reference data, satellite imagery, biophysical gradient layers, and classification and regression trees.DATA SUMMARY:The environmental site potential (ESP) data layer represents the vegetation that could be supported at a given site based on the biophysical environment. Map units are named according to NatureServe's Ecological Systems classification, which is a nationally consistent set of mid-scale ecological units (NatureServe 2008). Usage of these classification units to describe environmental site potential, however, differs from the original intent of Ecological Systems as units of existing vegetation. As used in LANDFIRE, map unit names represent the natural plant communities that would become established at late or climax stages of successional development in the absence of disturbance. They reflect the current climate and physical environment, as well as the competitive potential of native plant species. The ESP layer is similar in concept to other approaches to classifying potential vegetation in the western United States, including habitat types (for example, Daubenmire 1968 and Pfister and others 1977) and plant associations (for example, Henderson and others 1989).. It is important to note that ESP is an abstract concept and represents neither current nor historical vegetation. To create the ESP data layer for Hawaii, areas that were affected by disturbance across the landscape were identified in the EVT layer and masked. These disturbances included fire, insect damaged areas, and anthropogenic activities (i.e. timber harvesting, urban land cover, agriculture and pasture land cover types, introduced flora and fauna etc.). These areas were modeled via logical rule sets to the ecological system most likely to persist in the location in the absence of disturbance. Jim Jacobi (U.S. Geological Survey) and Sam Gon (The Nature Conservancy) served as the primary contacts for developing logical rule sets for Hawaiian environmental site potential (ESP) layer. Logical rule sets incorporated the Existing Vegetation Type (EVT) and readily available elevation, hydrologic, and climate datasets in order to predict the spatial distribution of the environmental site potential (ESP). Other independent variables, such as soils, wetlands, and flow accumulation, were integrated after internal quality control in order to refine the initial ESP prediction. Final ESP values were derived through a series of rulesets, lumping and/or splitting, and spatially contextual models. Although the ESP data layer is intended to represent current site potential, the actual time period for this data set is variable. Refer to spatial metadata for date ranges of field plot data and satellite imagery for each LANDFIRE map zone.LANDFIRE is a five-year, multi-partner wildland fire, ecosystem, and wildland fuel mapping project.
